Hackensack Meridian Health has partnered with Canary Speech, a speech analysis software company, to utilize Voice AI for diagnosing depression, anxiety, and potentially cognitive diseases like Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s. Hackensack aims to leverage technology to provide objective and actionable care plans for its clients. The integration of AI in healthcare has the potential to augment or replace up to 40% of healthcare working hours, according to a study by Accenture.

Canary Speech, led by co-founders Henry O’Connell and Jeff Adams, a former member of Amazon Alexa’s speech AI team, is the first company to hold patents specific to disease screening using voice AI. While its current technology can detect changing emotional wellness states, Canary is also researching the use of voice assessments for cognitive diseases, which could be particularly beneficial for seniors. Senior living communities such as Carlton Senior Living have already implemented Alexa-enabled devices for communication services, leading to improved efficiency and reduced emergency requests. Canary Speech also recently partnered with Microsoft to enhance its machine learning speech model capability and accelerate analysis.
